Why Fish Sing
A fish is born with scales
Its mouth open just right
To harmonize and vocalize
Each note it sees on sight.
I watched a bass go swimming by
While sailing on my schooner
I begged him sing a reel, but he said
"Not without my tuna"
I tailed him then to a plaice
That carries on night and day
With catchy tunes like "Heart and Sole"
And Dean Marlin's "That's A Moray"
"The porpoise of life" a mackeral said
"Is having a whale of a time!
So don't be koi or skate away
Now you know we fish can rhyme."
"Come out of your shell and mullet over!"
A lone shark called with a grin.
I stayed at the Craberet quite late
Till the curtain fell reading "Le Fin"

december 2009
i wish someone had told me
what to expect.
a never-ending series of bleached out rooms.
their doorways stood rigid down the hall –
precise right angles
numbered well into the thousands.
white walls enclosed white beds
with white sheets
and white faces peering from beneath them.
soulless beeps echoed around me,
different pitches
calling out in mechanical voices.
my head began a dull throbbing.
fists clenched,
i gulped in air tainted with sanitizer and chemicals.
eyes dull from injections with
sharp, poison-tipped needles,
he stared and wheezed and then smiled a little.
i was supposed to recognize that face,
but i couldn't.
this place had erased and broken him.

An Exercise in Imitation II
Remember how exciting
It seemed, running about,
In a playground wonderland
After lunch. With
Covered eyes we counted to ten
And ran to discover hidden playmates
Until we'd found every one.
Games and adventures filled
Our time outdoors. We'd
Play round after round of
Tag and kickball and hopscotch,
Taking turns at keep away and
The tire swing, around and around.
Young boys chased pig-tailed girls
Until red faced and panting we
Trudged back inside to
Numbers and lessons and letters -
Grown up things.
Two days ago, I visited
That schoolyard, watching,
Smiling at children
Playing all those games
I had once. From somewhere
A girl appeared
With reddened cheeks, and
Tagged me. Unable to resist,
I rejoined the game.
Still and always
A child.

An Exercise in Imitation
As a child, they could not keep me from black
And ivory piano keys with crisp, full sound.
I loved the dark wood, the trapped songs, the stack
Piled high of music, some more on the ground.
First, in a past house, with a gold lettered name.
I reveled in the strange sound I made, this
Dissonance of the keyboard a kind of game.
Unlearned talent seemingly gone amiss.
A grander on in a warm well lit space
Fashioned like a dreamed up antique dance hall.
When you trilled out long runs from a full place
A golden thought floated out at your call.
Some were electric, amping up the tune
With a clean new music in it. And one
Was woeful, for there, out of rhyme and ruin
Broken mem'ries in song sought out the sun.
Now, to play major chords, to write a song,
To stare, wannabe Mozart, at the page
Is forever my first art. But I long
To spread even - words, music, both with age.

Blossom
No one else could see
That single one's superiority
Over all the other sugary petals
In a playground garden. With
Fingers crossed, I took on
The Dare, deliciously simple –
A single pluck of the petals
Of plums and strawberries and peaches.
A guitar string snapped,
But I was deaf to such things,
Hurtling back to boldly brag of
My false victory.
I found myself in a
Pale colored room, the teacher's face paler,
Eyes with thunderstorms behind them,
Sharp lightning her words,
An unseen tempest
Foaming black and green and gray.
With a stomach like something dead,
I grasped tightly that flower, that
Dare, a secret poison, and
Sought release from the iron rain
Rusting lost pride, and aching for
Light's return in a dark train tunnel.

Poem to A.G.
Darling, when I look in your eyes and see
you smile at me, your face lights up my world
even more than the sunrise, that time we
laughed and held hands until the dawn unfurled.
Your voice is music to my ears, it’s true,
and when you whisper to me, I rejoice;
but even more, I find, when I’m with you,
that music speaks the thoughts I long to voice.
I hear your voice, and look, to catch your eye,
and as I do, am rendered lame and mute,
I grin, and wish that I could tell you why,
the feeling, in this silence, absolute:
I love you, and I just want you to know,
Embrace me, and I swear I won’t let go.

Lifetimes, Decending
let's live a lifetime, darling
here and now
and when that's not enough
go back and do it again
not just back to now
but further still,
through the years of childhood,
and backwards through the decades
let's go to Woodstock together,
and to a sock-hop
and a swing dance in the roaring twenties
back through centuries
we'll hobnob with royalty and poets
and, in between, escape to a quiet life in the country
comfortable, but unobtrusive
front row tickets to Shakespeare and Beethoven
watch the renaissance blossom around us
hide away together to pass the dark ages
meet emperors and heroes
live, as the pyramids rise on the horizon
and as they dwindle back to piles of sand
go all the way back to Eden together
and when that isn't enough, we'll go forward again

Which is why I've suddenly done basically a huge sketch dump sort of thing.

Friday I'll be returning to Williamsburg to finish my last year as an undergraduate. It's a little bit crazy, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. It's going to be a busy year ahead, but hopefully a great one. I'll be assistant designing our Theatre Department's production of Cabaret, which I'm really excited about. I've started looking into graduate schools for Scenic Design. What a process.

That's about all for now.
